Biggest Garden Mistake

Well, the good thing about making mistakes is that you learn from them. And boy did I learn a lesson! Never, I repeat, NEVER plant gourds in the middle of your garden. Ever. I didn't exactly plan to plant them in the middle of mine, but I ended up planting other stuff on the ends of the garden, so I had space left in the middle. I definitely should have planned it out better. But, it's not like I can change that now, so I am trying to deal with it the best way I can.

I bought two metal t-posts and a dented cattle panel (on sale for $10) from Tractor Supply over the weekend. Last night we put the posts in the ground and then wired the cattle panel up as high as we could. I very carefully started peeling the creeping gourd vines out of the lima beans, the flowers, and the tomatoes so I could wind them through the panel and up out of the way. I'm not going to lie, it wasn't easy. Not only did the gourd vines grip everything in their path, but the lima beans were tangled all over the gourd vines. I tried to be as gentle as possible, all the while getting a thousand sharp gourd prickles all over me.

You can actually see the row of lima beans now! There are weeds....but I'll tackle those. Actually, I mixed the week killer in the gallon sprayer last night. I was in weed-killing mode, ready to attack the weeds. I'm tired of pulling them, and it's so hot I don't even want to try anymore. The darn handle on the pressure sprayer had a crack, so I'll have to go to Southern States today and see if they sell replacement parts. If not, I'll have to buy a new sprayer. But I digress...

I may buy another post to put in the middle of the panel. It's 16' long, and David's afraid that if the wind catches it it won't last up there.

It's definitely progress. I'll have to trellis the lima beans next, but I have a plan for those!

Look at the baby Turk's Turbon gourds. Aren't they cute?!
And speaking of cute, look what I saw on my windshield this morning! David changed the oil in the car at work the other day. Aww.
And isn't it sad that this is our vehicle with the lowest mileage?!

Wow, good for you for tackling such a daunting task. I get so overwhelmed by stuff like that. Your garden is so lush! Are you using Roundup? I used that in my paths this year and I'm a huge fan. I'll never weed another pathway again!
I love that David put a heart on the change oil sticker :) What a nice way to start your morning :)

I haven't used any weed killer yet, but I will tonight! The weeds are just too far ahead of me at this point, so it'll be much easier to spray them. I bought a new sprayer. The repair kit was $13, and the new sprayer was $19.
