It's Fair Time!

I know it's been a while since I've posted, but my sister and her kids came up for a week long visit, so we've been busy! I'll blog more about things we did during their visit another day. Today I want to talk about the fair since today is the first official day of the fair.

Yesterday, Becky and I drove to the fair to enter my things and the kids' drawings. Here's a peek of some of the things I entered:

I knitted matching mittens for the green hat I knitted recently. They got entered as a set. The colors look slightly off in this picture...

Here is Kylee's drawing.

Here is Devin's.

Here is my turkey photo. I have high hopes for this one. I hope I'm not disappointed!

Here is an arrangement I made for the "miniature" category.

Here's my arrangement for the "kitchen arragement" category. I'm not sure what a kitchen arrangement is, but I entered one two years ago and won first place.

In the top picture you can see some of the canned goods I entered. I had applesauce, apple butter, venison, and pepper jelly. Then I entered dried tomatoes, peppers, and venison (jerky). I also had a few crafts. I entered three of the chicken ornaments (as a set) and one of the penguin ornaments from this post, and a purple nest ring and hair pin as a set for the jewelry category.

I hope to get to the fair soon and see how things did. That's part of the excitement....waiting to go see, looking through all of the other entries to spot yours. When we were kids we always entered things in the fair. Mom would have to remind us to make our crafts and to think about things we wanted to enter. Then we'd take the entries on Wednesday evening (our fair at home was only a weekend long) and wait in the long lines to enter things. Then Thursday afternoon when the fair opened, we'd have to wait for the whole family to walk through the buildings together to see how everyone did! It really made us feel like a part of the fair, and not just a spectator. We'd spend a lot of time at the fair. I can remember having a picnic lunch (we had fried chicken) on the ground behind a tree near the horse show ring. We'd spend almost all weekend at the fair. When we were slightly older, we got sheep for 4-H and we lived at the fair. Really, we did. We'd bring our camper and line it up with all the other 4-H families. It was nice to be there at the fair to take care of the animals and save trips back and forth to home. All the kids would play football in the showring at night. It was so much fun. I can remember waking up to the sound of the pigs squealing as the kids tried to wash them to get ready for the shows.

I still get excited going to any fair. I could just go sit and watch horse shows or livestock shows for hours. And I love wandering through the buildings seeing what everyone made. And fair food! You can't forget fair food...cotton candy, peanuts, kettle corn. YUM. How can you not love a fair?

Stay tuned for my fair post update!

Mom and I will be doing the same thing in a week. We compete against each other for fun. Last year we tied at $44 each. I want to whoop her this year, but my dahlias look pitiful.

I think the gobblers got a shot, for sure. He has so much character. Reminds me of a cranky old man!

You entered some really great things, Kate. I had a great time helping you enter your items. I wish my local fair was smaller like yours. Our huge fair seems so impersonal. I can't wait to see how many ribbons you've won! :)
