So here they were as cute fuzzy chicks in late August...
And here they are now at 4 weeks. I took these pictures this past weekend when I moved them into the chicken tractors. I had to split them into two groups.
I've been having to move the tractors every day because they make such a mess. Pretty soon I'll have to move them twice a day.
I'm thinking they're going to outgrow the pens....
I'm not sure what I'm going to do when that happens. I don't really want to free range them again, because they make a mess of the yard. I'm just counting down to processing time. Sometimes I get worn out from all the animals. I'm debating whether or not I want to raise any broilers next year. Maybe I'll feel differently about it after a long winter's break.

Cool... so when will it be time to process? It is alot of work but I'm sure so worth it.
What kind of chicken is that in front of the pen on the last picture? It's so pretty!
Jennifer, we're going to process at around 8 weeks. It's a lot of work, but it'll be worth it to have all that meat in the freezer!

Wow, look at all those chicks! That is a lot of work, Kate. I can tell you though that the meat that you raise is so delicious!! I've roasted 3 chickens so far and they are so much better then anything you can find in a store. HOpefully you'll enjoy eating them all winter and it'll make next summer's work worth the hassle. I wish I could come help you process all those birds... well, on second thought, maybe this is the one benefit of living 8 hours away! LOL
Broilers are messy, but can be worth it. Good Luck.
I like to process a few at 4-5 weeks old. I call them single serve birds. Bake several at once for a group of folks and everyone gets one.

I don't know how you do all that you do, Katiegirl! I am in awe. It's so much work and you spend long hours and lots of money to do it all. I hope you can get a break this winter. No dairy cows!! he he he Love you, Momma
