Asparagus

If I wasn't such a procrastinator, I would have planted asparagus right when we moved here.  If I had done that, we would be enjoying our full blown asparagus harvest this spring.  Instead, I waited 3 years.  Yep, that's typical!  Oh well, at least I finally did it and that's what matters.

I ordered some Jersey Knight asparagus, and planted them this weekend. I dug a long trench all the way down one side of the garden.  It was hard to decide where to put them since they're staying put and will be there for a very long time.

This poor crown was so desperate to grow it sprouted before I even got it in the ground.   I put lime and fertilizer down in the trench. Hopefully these crowns will grow well and provide us with a lot of delicious asparagus in the coming years.

And hopefully the asparagus isn't so close to the road that people will stop and steal it.  Do people do that?  Steal asparagus?  Hopefully not!

We really love asparagus in this house, so we can't wait to be able to harvest it!  Luckily there's a large vegetable farm near us and they grow acres and acres of it, so we can get it pretty cheaply until we get our own!

Devin is 9!

Devin turned 9 on Saturday.  I can't believe how grown up he is getting.  He's really turning into a nice boy with a great sense of humor, and smart too!

We had a little family get together for him, and then his best friend came over to play for a while.

Happy Birthday, Devin!

More Pics

I spent some time outside yesterday after doing the normal feeding and watering.  I moved the sheep and goat fence so they had a new area to graze.  I also took some pictures of all of the babies around the place.

The pig loved her treat of a too-ripe banana.  She's 9 weeks old now (born on Feb 3rd).

The lambs are just about 5 weeks old now (born on Feb 27) and getting cuter by the day.

This guy below is my favorite of the two  He's got darker points, and look at his cute little "mutton chop" facial hair.

The goats are hard to photograph, since they never ever stand still.  They're 6.5 weeks old now (born Feb 15th) and I'm counting down the days until they're weaned.  Some people love bottle feeding babies, but I cannot stand it!  They're just so darn obnoxious about it and it's a hassle.  I've always been this way though.  You either love it or you don't.  It just reminds me that I like sheep better than goats. Don't get me wrong, I love my does June and Ida, but if it wasn't for the goat milk I wouldn't hesitate to have only sheep.

I took this video when I let the kids and the pig out to graze a little bit.  The pig loves her time out, and luckily she doesn't stray too far...although she did meet the electric fence yesterday!

I really like having the pig.  Maybe one day when we have more space we can breed and raise them.

New Soaps!

Three new soaps in the shop!  I'm really excited about these.

The Coconut Lime Verbena and the Citrus Cilantro are two of my favorites.  They're fresh and not to sweet like some floral scents.

This shaving soap is something new.  It contains bentonite clay, which gives the lather a nice slip, so it's perfect for shaving.  The scent is gender neutral, so it's great for men and women alike.  This soap also has castor oil, which makes a really great lather.

Play Time Outside

I haven't showed the lambs lately, so I wanted to include a picture of them.  They're growing fast and getting cuter by the day!

The weather has been so nice lately, so I put the pig and goat kids in the outdoor pen to see how the liked it.  They all really had fun, and the pig loved rolling around on the ground and splashing herself with water.

The goats behaved like goats and tried to climb the wall.

Th

The goats were so funny jumping all around.

Joey's Ride

Joey, my brother in law, just bought a scooter to drive back and forth to work, since his truck doesn't get the best gas mileage. He was nice enough to bring it over so we could all take it for a spin around the yard!

Here's Joey and his girlfriend.

My brother, Chris, came for a visit and took it for a spin.

David took each of the kids for a ride, and let them steer.

And I took it for a few loops! It was pretty fun to ride, and will definitely save him gas money. Luckily he doesn't work too far from home.
